ProPhotoWest Magazine: 1st Place in the Nation (Again)!

We’re so excited, and honored to be recognized this way. But we didn’t do it alone. Many thanks who all the professional photographers, vendors and advertisers out there, who helped us make ProPhotoWest what it is today. We appreciate it more than you can know. - Peg and Steve

<Begin PPA News Release>

Congratulations 2009 Affiliate Newsletter Editors and Webmasters!

Starting the end of February 2009, PPA held its 2009 Affiliate Communications Competition. Qualified judges came in from the communications field, scoring the publications and websites in the following three areas:

Fear Me

Okay…so most pictures need a caption or title to provide meaning. Some however, simply do not. I my opinion, this image fits squarely into the latter category.

Doesn’t the expression on my kitty’s precious little face say it all?

Wow!

Wow!”  That’s the word that keeps coming to my mind when I think about this past weekend, and our time spent at the Western States Convention - ProPhotoWest Expo and Trade Show in Pasadena this past weekend.

Not only did we get to hang with some of the best photographers in the nation (like Kevin Kubota, John Woodard, Tim Myer, Phillip Abel, and Ken Sklute), but we also made tons of new friends, learn lots, and came away with more knowledge than when we arrived.
If for some reason you didn’t make it, don’t fear: PPC is holding another one in South San Francisco August 21 - 23rd. And as a last resort…there’s always next year.

Feel free to check back here for more details, or if you prefer, go straight to the source at www.prophotoca.com.

Till next time – Peg and Steve

One for the Books…

As usual, things have been crazy busy around here, and the poor blog has been somewhat ignored. Luckily, I’ve carved out a little time this morning to make some updates (Okay, so actually, I’m avoiding the day’s tasks ahead - helping our son move to a new school and apartment!)

Admit it: If given the choice between blogging and moving, which would you pick? :)

One of the projects I just finished up was the creation of the Channel Islands Professional Photographers Association’s (CIPPA) annual hard cover book, featuring all their 2008 category photographers of the year, along with all the award winning photography from the membership. It ended up taking twice as long to complete, because we have so many gosh-darn talented members. Over 88 merit prints alone! In the end, the book ended up being close to 200 color pages, with a beautiful hard bound cover featuring the work of our Photographer of the Year (and dear friend): Anne Hutton.

[caption id="attachment_384" align="alignnone" width="475" caption="Compiled and Edited by Peggy Roosa"]CIPPA 2008 Masterpiece Collection[/caption]

It’s being printed by fellow CIPPA members: Jim and Stephanie of Image Source. Image Source is a fabulous local printing house, located close by in Ventura. They offer fine art printing, greeting cards, photographic prints, and the like. You can check them out for yourself at http://www.imagesourceonline.com/  They’ve been printing the CIPPA annual masterpiece collection for three years now, and always do a wonderful job.

Steven and I saw the proof earlier this week, and it was fabulous! We are so excited! The final copy will be available later this week, just in time for PPC’s Pro Photo West Expo Convention, in Pasadena Marcy 20-23rd. We’ll have several on display at the CIPPA booth on the trade show flow. And when Steven and I aren’t manning the West Coast Shool booth, or helping with the million and one things needed to make this event the best photography convention in the west, you’ll find us at the CIPPA both, meeting and greeting old and new friends alike.

Why don’t you stop by, and say “Hi” for yourself? See you there! - Peggy and Steven Roosa

Steven & Peggy Earns Merits in State Print Competition

It was a stressful but exciting week here at Sandstone Photography!

For those of you who don’t know, Tuesday was PPC’s (Professional Photographers of California) annual state-wide print competition. It’s a time for meeting old friends, making new ones. It’s also a time of secrete fear and stress, and sometimes even momentarily doubting your own abilities as a photographer, as your very best images go head-to-head with some of the best in the state (sometimes even the nation.) In case you’re wondering how this works, each print is held under a bright spot light before a panel of professional judges, who decide within 30 seconds or less the worthiness of your photographic talents. It’s intimidating, to say the least! And on some level, scarily reminiscent of spy interrogation scenes from those old war movies, where you find yourself fearing for the hero’s life. For one long moment in time, your very best is out there, naked for the world to see and judge. What if you’re not good enough? What if your worst secret fears come true?

Luckily, that was not the case this time around! Both Steven and I survived, with Steven (of course!) earning merit scores for all of his images (what else is new?) Here’s a quick look at a few of his entries:

CIPPA’s 2008 New Artist of the Year!

Peggy and I are members of the Channel Islands Professional Photographer’s Association http://www.cippa.org/, a fabulous group of local professional photographers. We joined last year, right before taking over the Professional Photographers of California’s ProPhotoWest magazine, and at that time never dreamed what a tremendous impact this group would have on our personal and professional lives.

Not only are these some of the warmest and kindest people you could ever want to meet, but they are also some of the very best photographers in the state.  So it is no small feat to walk away at the end of the year with any type of award at all. And yet, I’m proud to announce that at our year-end gala on Thursday night, Peggy did just that: She was named CIPPA’s 2008 New Artist of the Year.

Here’s a quick look at the images that earned her this prestigeous honor:

[caption id="attachment_320" align="alignnone" width="438" caption="Mia Bella"]Mia Bella[/caption]

The first two images were taken during our last trip to New Orleans. The Lamborhini was taken at the Santa Barbara beach, after a day of shooting wild animals (with cameras, of course!) at that city’s beautiful zoo. She certainly has come a very long way.

Way to go Baby! I’m so very, very proud of you! - Steve

Our Second Edition of Pro Photo West Magazine

[caption id="attachment_291" align="alignnone" width="425" caption="Fall/October Edition"]Fall/October Edition[/caption]

I’m not kidding when I say creating this magazine is a lot like giving birth.

It’s one the most fun and frustrating activities we’ve undertaken in a long, long time. Yet, after all the long hours and hard work (and sometimes, even a few tears), the final edition is delivered from the publisher to our doorstep… and very much like a baby… is suddenly worth it all!

Sandstone Attends International Photographic Convention

THOUSAND OAKS, CA Steven and Peggy Roosa, of Sandstone Photography in Thousand Oaks, recently attended Imaging USA, one of the largest conventions (and tradeshows) designed exclusively for photography and imaging professionals. Over 7,500 photographers and vendors attended this event January 11-13 in Phoenix, Ariz.

“In today’s aggressive business market, I feel that I need every advantage to keep my business as a leader in our market. The education and networking that occurs at Imaging USA has become my edge.” commented Dennis Craft, 2008-09 PPA President.

Increasing the breadth of knowledge available, Imaging USA co-located with the Sport and Event Photography Conference (SEPCON), the Commercial Photography Conference, and the Evidence Photographers International Council’s EPIC School. By combining the resources of these four events, organizers provided the industry’s most diverse forum for photographic education.

With over 90 combined programs designed to improve artistic and business success, Imaging USA and its co-located events helped attendees increase their knowledge and skills in all photography specialties. These programs focused on topics from photographic techniques to the latest advancements in digital imaging, along with critical business education. Imaging USA also featured the Imaging Expo, a tradeshow with over 600 booths, highlighting the latest in photographic equipment, supplies, and services from the industry’s top vendors. In addition, PPA’s International Print Exhibition displayed over 2,500 award-winning photographs.

Imaging USA has established itself as the first major photographic event of the year. It began in 1884 as the annual convention and tradeshow for Professional Photographers of America and is the longest running national photographic convention, expo and image exhibition in the United States. In 2006, Imaging USA welcomed Adobe as an official sponsor of the Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for Photographers track, a sponsorship that continues today. In 2008, a new Business First educational track was added, sponsored by WHCC. For more information, visit www.imagingusa.org.
