Sandstone Sports Center

I guess it’s just natural to assume that because we shoot kids (with a camera - of course!), that we also do sports photography. Afterall, sports and kids do go together like peanut butter and jelly. Yet few folks outside of the photographic community really appreciate the difference in skill set and equipment needed to produce really good action shots.

Lucky for us, Steven seems to be good at anything he tries. I guess after 30+ years of practice, he should be! :)

Of course, being portrait photographers at heart, we couldn’t end this blog without a sport-related portrait shot…could we?  - Peggy and Steven

So Happy Together…

When Ed and Nancy came to us looking for holiday prints for Christmas gifts, little did we know their portrait session would also double as a commemoration of their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Can you believe it? S-I-X-T-Y years together. Woe!

In our opinion, they don’t look old enough to have been married that length of time. And did you notice how happy they look together?

Laughing in the Snow…

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t snowing outside.

In fact, it was a perfect SoCal day, with highs in the mid 70’s and a slight ocean breeze to match. But this was a holiday shoot, and I’m pretty certain it was snowing SOMEPLACE in the world…don’t you think?

Anyway, we had so much fun with this dynamic couple back in September, and were just thrilled beyond words that they thought of us when it came time to shoot their blossoming family. This time, Kevin and Stephanie brought along Stephanie’s little brother Mike, and Patty, his lovely bride-to-be.

As it turns out, little brother got a double-dose of the ‘just wanna have fun’ genes. He made us laugh so hard, we cried!

Of course, neither Stephanie or Patty are the type of women to be out done by a little ‘over acting’. They can definitely hold thier own in this family. Just take a look below, to see what I mean.

Hey There, Girl!

What could be more perfect than spending the day enjoying Malibu’s surf and sand? Spending it with this gorgeous teen, modeling for us at sunset!

You don’t have to look too hard to quickly realize we were practically in a windstorm on this blustery September afternoon. As the evening came on, the temperature dropped dramatically, and although Taylor was shivering and shaking, and wearing Goosebumps almost the size of marbles, she was determined to work it to the very end. And work it she did! Talk about being a natural.

Talent agents, get in line! Potential beaus too. Something tells me this beauty has plenty of options.

Just Horsing Around

I don’t know about you, but as a little girl back in South Georgia, I spent all my time dreaming of owning a horse. I read all the horse books I could get my hands on, collected the Breyer models, and even turned my day dreams of them into short stories stitched together by my mother on her Singer sewing machine. Well, when we were invited out to take some photos of Lacey and her children, I unwittingly found another horsey-soulmate! Only this lucky lady is living the dream! Not only does she own three beautiful horses, corralled right outside her back porch, there for her to touch or ride any time she likes, but she also has a beautiful family to share them with.

I’m so jealous! Something tells me that after you take a look at a few of the images below, you’ll be jealous too! - Peg

Fun with Baby & Props

Earlier this week, Joanne had the chance to photograph this beautiful 6 month old baby, using some of our favorite props, and others borrowed from friends and family. The results were priceless! Check out below to see for yourself.

These images were taken Tuesday afternoon, in a public park in Ventura, California. Talk about keeping it all in the family; this beautiful baby’s aunt and cousin hung around to help. In fact, her young cousin even held the light reflector for Joanne! Now, that’s teamwork. Obviously, everyone’s efforts really paid off. I’m sure you’ll agree: These photos are fantastic!

More of Martina

We just got some press pics of Miss Martina for the Boobapalooza Breast Cancer Fundraiser this coming Saturday night, so I decided to share a few with you here.

Isn’t she beautiful? And so compassionate too, agreeing to help us out like this on less than one week’s notice. Thanks so much Martina! - Peg

Doing Our Part at Boobapalooza (Breast Cancer Fundraiser)

What exactly is a Boobapalooza, you may be asking?

Well, it’s a breast cancer fundraiser being held this coming Saturday night (August 23) in Camarillo, CA. The event is being hosted by the Hultman’s at their beautiful home on 2124 Paseo Noche, from 4 to 9pm.  Steven and I haven’t met the Hultman’s before, but Joanne knows them through her other charity work, and she keeps telling us what a wildly fun couple they are. As if the tag line for their event didn’t already give it away?!?

Check this out:

See what I mean?

We here at Sandstone are so honored to be able to help out such a worthy cause. Not only will we be the event photographers, but we’re also setting up a booth where we’ll be taking and giving away photographs in lieu of donations, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

If you’re going to be in the area, why don’t you stop by and check it out? The $25 entrance fee not only covers all the food and fun you can handle, but is also tax deductible too. We’re gonna have a wild and crazy time!

You can view Paula Hultman’s Evite with all the details for yourself at

And here’s the link to the Susan G. Komen Foundations Site too

Where’s Sandstone Photographers Been Lately?

I’m not certain how many of you know this, but besides working at Sandstone with Joanne, Steven and I also do double duty as the Co-Editors of ProPhotoWest Magazine, the award winning quarterly publication of the Professional Photographers of California  So, every three months or so, we suddenly get swamped with work related to the magazine, which is lots of fun, but really crazy-hectic at the same time. In my opinion, putting together the magazine is a lot like having a baby. The work is hard and completely consuming, with the time required to complete the task finite, but in the end, the final results are so worth it! We’ve even been accused of beaming at our new little magazine like proud parents. Maybe that’s because sometimes we almost feel like we are!

Our First Pro Photo West Issue

You can check out the PDF version of our inaugural issue at

Our Autumn issue is in the works now, and is scheduled to ship from the printer in early October. Check back then for an update on how it all went, and a link to that issue too.

So, what does Joanne do while Steven and I are off selling ads, chasing down contributors, and creating the actual magazine! Anything she wants!

As it turns out, this is the perfect time for her to hone her photographic and artistic talents by working on pet projects, very close to her heart. If you have the time, take a moment to check out her latest efforts, coming here very soon.

And what about Jarett, you may be asking yourself? He’s been busy leading his own life, preparing for his freshman year of college at Santa Monica, moving into his first apartment, practicing with the varsity football team, and registering for Fall courses. So he hasn’t been shooting as much as he (or I) would like. However, he does have a glamour shoot scheduled with two beautiful professional models; Laura and Eryka of the California Ring Girls. So, he’ll be getting back behind the lens here very soon. - Peg

Isn’t She Sweet? (Dahlia’s Toddler Session)

Awwwee! Isn’t she sweet?

Sugar and spice, and everything nice… This little girl absolutely stole our hearts away.

All of us had a wonderful time with Dahlia, laughing, playing, and making funny faces together. She was a complete doll, making our job easy by giving us lots of faces with tons of expression. And believe it or not, the natural talent in front of the camera runs in the family!

Speaking of which - we owe her big sis Marissa (not shown) a big THANK YOU for all her assistance on this shoot. Marissa was absolutely terrific, helping out in just about every way. (In fact, she almost made me feel guilty about not having been a better big sister when I was her age.)

I’m betting that if you look closely, you can pick out the shots where Marissa was making funny faces and exaggerated sneezing sounds behind Steven’s back!

We are SO looking forward to doing this beautiful family’s holiday portraits! - Peg, Steven and Joanne
